Cataloging The University of Virginia Libraries'
Four-Millionth Volume

The University Library is committed to providing access to electronic materials in its collections. The different versions of the Libraries' four-millionth volume Lady Freedom Among Us presented a number of cataloging challenges. The printed version of the four-millionth volume was cataloged on 8 November 1994 by Gayle Cooper, Rare Books Cataloger; the electronic text and the WWW exhibition were cataloged by Edward Gaynor, Head of Original Cataloging. The bibliographic records were created on OCLC using the books and computer files formats, and were transferred into VIRGO, our local online catalog. From VIRGO, the records were exported on tape to RLIN. In addition, the Electronic Text Center created a TEI-conformant, SGML-tagged header for the electronic text.
