As part of the celebration of the Bicentennial festivities in 1976, Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain visited the United States. She visited the University of Virginia on July 10, 1976, and was feted in the Dome Room of the Rotunda. The royal luncheon was the first state occasion in the newly-rebuilt Rotunda and was reminiscent of the banquet given for Lafayette in 1824.
