Barrett Daycare Center: Operations and Activities
This newsletter, dated June 17, 1960, documents some of the children's activities. These included the daily recess on the daycare's playground, special events such as birthday parties, plays, and musical performances. There was also an annual graduation, but this event did not take place in 1960, due to the small number of graduating students, according to the newsletter. It is also notable that by 1960, the daycare had begun to invite students from the UVa nursing school to observe the children and assist in their daily activities.
Music is an important part of the Barrett Daycare's activities. Today, the daycare students continue to put on musical and theatrical performances for the community.
Among the Barrett Daycare papers are a number of invoices and lists of items that the staff ordered for the daycare.
At a staff meeting on March 31, 1941, one of the teachers suggested that a graduation ceremony should be held at the end of each year to celebrate the students' success at the daycare. These graduation exercises are an annual event at the daycare today.
