Barrett Daycare Center: Staff

During the early years of its operation, the nursery staff was composed of four ladies who had public school teaching certificates but no special training in kindergarten work. When WPA support was withdrawn in 1943, the staff decreased from four to three.

Despite the cut in funds, daycare enrollment grew and it became necessary to add one full-time teacher, a part-time cook, a janitor, and a nurse. In 1950, the daycare employed a full-time, trained director and soon thereafter, the number of applications increased significantly, far exceeding the capacity of the nursery and resulting in a waiting list that was over half of the enrollment. In 1952 the daycare board approved the employment of another full-time teacher.
