The Gordon Collection volumes in this category include defenses of the French language, arts poétiques, treatises on grammar, punctuation, spelling, pronunciation, translation, and a letter-writing manual. The works listed below convey the changes occurring during the sixteenth century, as the French language emerges from the shadow of Latin, seeks to rival classical languages and the Italian vernacular, and moves toward more standardized grammar and spelling.

Du Bellay recommends translating classical texts in order to introduce new lexical items and concepts into the French language, enriching it and allowing it to rival and surpass Latin. The process that Du Bellay recommends is one of imitation (imitatio) that nourishes the French language, echoing earlier advice from Dolet on this topic. Dolet lays out several key rules for translators, including the need to understand thoroughly the material to be translated, to possess a complete command of both languages and an understanding of the unique properties of each, to avoid translating word for word, and to focus on achieving harmony in the results. The need to translate works from Greek, Latin, and other vernacular languages into French and the corresponding question of how best to achieve worthy results are a recurring theme of authorial prefaces to the numerous literary translations in the Gordon Collection.

Dolet's Manière de bien traduire is accompanied by rules on punctuation, accents, and spelling, reflecting the growing need and concern in Renaissance France for codification of diverse linguistic practices. The growth of the printing trade and increasing numbers of books being printed in French undoubtedly spurred the need for further standardization of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

Pierre de La Ramée (Petrus Ramus) and Louis Meigret were part of the first generation of French grammarians who set about describing the language in a normative way, proscribing rules for its proper use. Already in the sixteenth century, the written forms of the language did not correspond directly to the spoken language, a topic examined by Jacques Peletier du Mans. This décallage between the written and spoken language is the central complaint of the characters in Laurent Joubert's "Cacographie."

Of primary concern to those responsible for enriching the French language and developing its literature were the esthetics and rules of poetry in the vernacular. Sebillet's Art Poetique (1548) looks back to forms made popular by the preceding generation of poets, including Clément Marot, and forward to the new sensibilities of the Pléïade poets, Ronsard and Du Bellay chief among them.
