1828 Catalogue of the Library of the University of Virginia

In 1945, the University Library reproduced the 1828 catalogue as a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Great Fire. The facsimile reproduction contains an introductory essay by William Harwood Peden, and was printed for the Alderman Library by Edwards Brothers of Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The first printed catalogue of the University of Virginia Library lists approximately 8,000 titles "arranged alphabetically, under different heads with the number and size of the volumes of each work, and its edition specified." The catalogue is based on Jefferson's manuscript list of books for the University Library, and was compiled by the second University Librarian, William Wertenbaker. The printed catalogue is arranged in twenty-nine chapters, as opposed to the forty-two divisions of the manuscript catalogue.
